When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

In a word, no. Lava is a newer material (more expensive) which is no better, and possibly not as good as Porcelain to gold crowns. Long term there is no proof that it works any better or lasts any longer. Only time will tell. It is bonded in place and not cemented, so that may be a weak link to early failure. A well done porcelain to gold crown should last in a healthy mouth for 20+ years. Why switch materials?

None that I can see. I concur with the other respondent. Why use something just because it is new when the existing technique is time tested and effective.

no, there is no advantage, and several disadvantages. 1) cost....the dentist is going to hit you hard with an increased fee. 2) longevity....no idea, new product....no long term data 3) why? a very well made porcelain fused to gold crown in best for this area anyway. Lava or any all porcelain product is contraindicated in the posterior (for now). Make sure if you go with a porcelain fused to metal crown, get an alloy certificate. why? non precious crowns are very popular with some dentists, they are charging you for a very expensive crown but doing a bait and switch. Also....make sure the crown is made domestically....many dentists have reverted to labs outside the country....very bad
